Public consultation on plans to build more than 400 homes in Chester city centre closes this week.

The proposals form part of the next phase of the Northgate regeneration scheme, which aims to create a new residential community of more than 400 sustainable homes in the city centre, including affordable housing.

Alongside the housing development, the plans include new public spaces and supporting infrastructure designed to improve access through the city centre and increase footfall in the area.

The current stage of public consultation remains open until Friday 19 June.

Plans for the Northgate regeneration scheme also involve the removal of buildings associated with the former Forum site, with the aim of opening up views of the Town Hall and enhancing its setting. The historic building is currently partially obscured by surrounding development.

Design proposals for the area draw inspiration from Chester's historic street layout. Early concepts also include a new cultural building on Town Hall Square, which could provide gallery, performance and community spaces, alongside exhibition areas showcasing the city's history.

Steve Parry, Managing Director of ION Developments, said: "We've been pleased by the level of interest and engagement received so far.

"Building on our initial discussions with stakeholders, this consultation provides an important opportunity for the wider community to help shape the emerging vision for Northgate.

"Every comment received will help inform the next stages of the masterplan as we continue developing proposals for this important part of the city."

More detailed proposals are expected to be published ahead of the submission of a formal planning application.

Further details of the engagement process and an online feedback form can be found here. The closing date for comments is 19 June 2026.
