The Dachshund Derby returned to Chester Racecourse last weekend.

A total of 11 sausage dogs competed for the title of 'Top Dog' on Saturday (12 September), after more than 1,000 entries were received through Facebook and Instagram.

Five-year-old Shelby took first place, sprinting down the final furlong of the world's oldest operational racecourse.

Competitors followed a format similar to a traditional race day, completing a lap of the Parade Ring before taking part in the race.

Jax won the 'Best Turned Out' competition, receiving a champagne bottle toy and a family ticket to the Christmas Dachshund Extravaganza.

Prizes were provided by A Dach of Style and Wanderin Weenies and presented by 2025 winner Nellie and her owners, Paul and Mel.

Shelby's first prize included a two-night stay at Wanderin Weenies, a personalised snuggle sack from Dach of Style, a family ticket to the Christmas Dachshund Extravaganza and a champagne bottle toy.

Norman finished second and Ernie third. Both received a champagne bottle toy, treats and a family ticket to the Christmas Dachshund Extravaganza.

Sam Martin, head of marketing and communications at Chester Race Company, said: "The dachshund derby was another huge hit this year – and it's no surprised as people absolutely loved it last year, so we just had to bring it back.

"It adds an extra bit of fun for guests and brings a whole new meaning to 'small victories'.

"Congratulations to Shelby on his big win, and thank you to all the dog owners who made an effort to travel from across the country in some cases and add more theatre to our race day.
