Chester firefighters save young cow stuck in deep mud

Yesterday morning (26 August), fire crews rescued a four-year-old cow trapped in deep mud in Chester.
At 10:32am, two fire engines from Chester and Knutsford, alongside one weekday fire engine was sent to Whitchurch Road, Chester.
Stuck in mud almost three metres deep, the young cow's head was covered by a fallen branch.
The cow, weighing around half a tonne, was still able to breathe as its nose and eyes were just above the surface.
Firefighters worked alongside a farmer who provided machinery to assist with the rescue, and a vet who monitored the cow's welfare throughout.

A team of specialist animal rescue trained firefighters secured the cow's head above the surface, before developing a safe rescue plan to cause minimal distress.
Using specialist animal straps and lines, firefighters successfully rescued the cow and moved it to dry land.
A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Thanks to the coordinated efforts of all involved and the cow's calm and cooperative nature, the rescue was a success.
"Our crews said it was clear the cow would never have escaped without help, and the teamwork of everyone on scene made all the difference."
