A Chester student is preparing for the launch of her first fantasy novel.

Five years in the making, 'None Down, Three to Go' is Vicki Bolland's debut book - following the journey of twin brother warriors, Max and Sam, as they face new challenges.

When they discover their sister Elodie is missing and has harmed herself, Max must confront her and convince her to seek help.

Returning to the fort, tensions rise among the siblings and they must navigate their strained relationships.

With themes of family bonds, mental health and the impact of past promises, the book is a tale of courage, sacrifice and the enduring strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

The 22-year-old master's student said: "It took me five years on and off to finish.

"To see it published is the best feeling; it's like a piece of you that you get to give to the world.

"My inspiration to write this book came from another fantasy book I read where the characters didn't feel real to me.

"I decided I wanted to create a fantasy book that took place in a fictional world, but where the characters feel real.

"My characters have to deal with things we don't - such as a curse and an evil king trying to kill them, but also things we do, such as mental health issues, grief and fear.

"It's aimed at young adults, suitable for over the age of 16.

"If people are a fan of The Hunger Games, Game of Thrones or Percy Jackson, I think they'd enjoy it."

'None Down, Three to Go' is available to pre-order at WatersonesAmazon and Pegasus Publishers - with its release date on May 29.
