A city centre road will be closed next month as part of construction works for Chester's new archive centre.

From 9 to 27 February, the westbound lane towards Hoole Road along Lightfoot Street will be closed.

Construction works will be in place to connect the power and entrance for the new Cheshire Archive Centre on Lightfoot Street, Hoole, located on the site of the former Enterprise Centre.

As a result, Lightfoot Street will be one way only, heading from Hoole Road to the mini roundabout at the Westminster Road junction.

A diversion route will be clearly signposted along Hoole Lane to the A41 Ring Road to access Hoole Road.

The lane closure will allow works by Scottish Power to connect a new power supply to the Archive Centre, as well as making an opening in the brick boundary wall, which will form the vehicle and pedestrian access into the new Archive Centre.

The power connection will require the digging of a cable trench along Lightfoot Street to the new Archive Centre entrance.

Co-hosting Cheshire's unique and irreplaceable archives, the new archives centre will record the development of the county and its communities from the Middle Ages to the present day.

The centre will give residents opportunities to explore their past through research, talking to expert staff and volunteers, exhibitions and events.

An equivalent centre is being built in Crewe on Memorial Square, on the site of the old library which closed in 2016.

These two centres will replace the Cheshire Record Office in Chester and are set to open this autumn.

"Please bear with us while we construct a fantastic new Archive Centre," said Councillor Louise Gittins, leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council.

"Due to open in the autumn, visitors will be able to discover untold stories of Cheshire's people and places spanning 900 years of history."

In addition to council funding, the construction of the new Archive Centres has been made possible through The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Wolfson Foundation, an independent charity with a focus on research and education.
