A man from Chester has been charged with the manslaughter of a 38-year-old woman.

Jennifer Smith was found deceased at an address in Ellesmere Port on June 1, 2023.

Following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service today (December 4), Peter Scargill has been charged with manslaughter, stalking involving serious alarm, distress and blackmail.

The 48-year-old of Cherry Road, Chester, is due to appear at Warrington Magistrates Court later today.

Cheshire Constabulary and the Crown Prosecution Service has issued a reminder that criminal proceedings against Mr Scargill are now active and that he has a right to a fair trial.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Constabulary said: "It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings."
