Today (27 March), The Chester Grosvenor has said it is prioritising support for staff, many of whom have spent decades at the landmark venue, following last week's closure announcement.

On Thursday 19 March, Bespoke Hotels, the operator of The Chester Grosvenor, announced the hotel would close by the end of September. It will continue to operate as normal until then.

It is understood that Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) was discovered in some of the building's conference rooms, causing a potential safety risk. The operator pointed to "the scale and complexity" of the works required to put a long-term solution in place.

A spokesperson for the hotel has now released a statement, after taking time to pause "out of respect" for its team.

Confirming the hotel's closure on 30 September 2026, they said: "We've been incredibly touched by the kindness and support in your messages. So many of our team have given years - some even decades - to The Chester Grosvenor, and our focus now is on supporting them through the months ahead.

"For the next six months, The Chester Grosvenor will continue to operate as normal with the iconic service, warmth and unforgettable style that have shaped so many cherished moments.

"In the coming weeks, we'll be sharing how you can experience The Chester Grosvenor in the months ahead, including how to redeem gift vouchers and book stays or dining.

"We invite you to create lasting memories with us as we mark this final chapter together - honouring the people who have made it so meaningful."

Following the initial closure announcement, the Grosvenor Estate, which owns the freehold of the landmark hotel, said it would invest in refurbishing the building.

It confirmed plans to find a new operator after the major refurbishment, with its priority being "the long-term future of the hotel".

All other public areas of the hotel, including the car park, are unaffected and continue to operate as normal.

In an earlier statement, the company said it was "sorry to acknowledge" the decision by Bespoke Hotels.

It said: "We are sorry to acknowledge that Bespoke Hotels has taken the decision to cease operating the hotel following its summer closure, and for the impact this will have on those whose roles may be affected.

"Our priority now is to ensure the long-term future of the hotel given its importance to Chester."

Outlining how it is an organisation "steeped in the history" of Chester, it revealed plans currently being developed for a major refurbishment, supported by "significant investment" and the appointment of a new operator.

This work, the announcement said, would "protect the future of Cheshire's only five-star large hotel".
