Chester Castle commemorates historic city walls breach with free event

A free event will take place at Chester Castle this weekend to commemorate the historic breach of the city walls during the English Civil War.
The event will conclude Heritage Chester's programme of free events throughout September, as part of England's largest festival of history and culture .
This Sunday (21 September) costumed re-enactors at Chester Castle will reveal the history of the city during the period, with events taking place from 11am.
Later that afternoon at 2pm, guests can walk with the City Watch to the breach site in the Roman Gardens, where a dedication to all those affected by the siege of Chester will take place.
A spokesperson for Heritage Chester said: "Step back in time to one of the darkest and most heroic chapters in Chester's history - September 1645, during the English Civil War."
"Meet the citizens making up the city watch of Chester in Chester Castle, hear and learn about life in a city under threat.
"From Chester Castle, walk with the city watch to the site of the historic breach at Newgate, where Royalist and Parliamentarian forces clashed on September 22 1645, almost 380 years ago to the day."
Taking place from 12-21 September, Heritage Chester's programme features over 70 unique events across the city and the surrounding area, offering access to normally closed venues and hidden gems.
Stuart Robinson, director of Heritage Chester, added: "We are thrilled to be part of this incredible national celebration of our shared heritage.
"From Roman foundations to Victorian innovations, our programme showcases 2,000 years of Chester's remarkable history through buildings and places that tell extraordinary stories."
Heritage Open Days has been running nationally since 1994 and is coordinated by the National Trust. The festival is part of the European Heritage Days programme, which sees millions of people across Europe celebrating their cultural heritage each September.
All events during Heritage Open Days are free of charge, though some specialist tours may require advance booking.
The full programme is available at www.heritagechester.co.uk with events running from drop-in visits to guided walks and expert-led talks.
