Brio Northgate has reopened today (5 May) following a 17-month, multi-million-pound transformation of one of Chester's most popular leisure facilities.

Delivered by Read Construction and funded by Cheshire West and Chester Council, the redevelopment has introduced upgraded pool facilities, a refreshed gym, new changing areas, modern studio spaces and improvements to outdoor areas.

Visitors can expect a significantly enhanced experience, including a high-tech gym, state-of-the-art fitness studios and a redesigned pool with interactive features and improved accessibility.

Additional upgrades include refurbished changing areas, an improved sauna and steam suite, and a range of eco-friendly measures such as LED lighting, solar panels and upgraded filtration systems.

Work began in January 2025, with the centre remaining partially open throughout. During this time, Brio Northgate welcomed more than 15,000 visits and retained over 3,000 members each month.

The centre's iconic Whale remains in place, freshly painted and ready to inspire a new generation while reconnecting with those who grew up with it.

Matthew Parker, managing director of Brio, said: "On behalf of everyone at Brio, we're delighted that Brio Northgate is ready to reopen, marking an exciting new chapter for this much-loved facility.

"We're looking forward to welcoming residents from across the borough to experience everything the centre now has to offer, in a space that is truly inclusive, modern and accessible.

"Thank you to the local community for their patience and support during the refurbishment and to our brilliant staff who have shown total commitment and dedication throughout the project and worked tirelessly the past couple of weeks to get the facility ready for use."

Following building handover on 17 April, a full closure period has enabled fit out to take place and allow for operational testing and staff training across all areas. A series of test sessions were also held, providing an opportunity for early community feedback.

As a gesture of thanks, Brio introduced an exclusive membership package for retained members, alongside an 'Early Bird' offer which will be running until the end of May for new and returning customers.
